Is The Google Pixel 6a A Good Phone
The Pixel 6a is Google’s latest mid-range smartphone that offers the same chips and performance as its flagship phones, but in a new, smaller body at a lower price.

The phone costs £399 ($449 / $749), which is £200 less than the Pixel 6, but offers 80% of what you get with Google’s top models.
The 6a also looks like a Pixel 6 hit by a shrink ray. It has a flat glass front, stereo speakers, painted aluminum sides, and a dual-tone rear panel with a camera cable at the top. The 6a is lighter at 29g and the back is made of high-quality plastic instead of glass, but it’s still just as strong and well-built as its big brother.
The rear camera lens is still a unique design, but it doesn’t end as low as other Pixel phones, making it easy to sit on tables. Photo: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
The smaller 6.1-inch OLED screen lacks the Pixel 6’s fast refresh rate, which makes it a bit grainy to work with, but is otherwise sharp, colorful and bright. The smaller screen makes the 6a the size of the iPhone 13 and strikes a balance between being big enough without being too big to hold comfortably.
The Pixel 6a Isn’t Perfect, But I Love It For One Big Reason
The Pixel 6a takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fully charge, reaching 60% in 44 minutes using a USB-C adapter that outputs 18V or more (not included). There is no charging cable. Photo: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
The Pixel 6a has a Tensor processor that’s on par with Google’s top 2021 phones with slightly less RAM, making it faster than all other mid-range competitors and well-optimized for high level. Google’s various AIs.
Battery life is pretty good for a small phone, lasting around 34 hours between charges, matching the larger Pixel 6 and putting it on par with its high-end rivals. It was on the screen for about five hours with messages, information and various tools, browser and taking about 20 photos, spending about two hours on 5G, the rest on wifi.

Google doesn’t give a battery life, but it should last more than 500 full charges with at least 80% of its original power. Pixel 6 can be repaired by Google and other stores. Screen repair costs £119 and battery replacement £69 without Google warranty.
The Pixel 6a is made from recycled glass, plastic and aluminum, which accounts for 20% of the phone’s weight. The company publishes environmental impact reports for some of its products. Google will use old apps for free.

Pixel 6a comes with Android 12, which includes many customization options, smart updates and impressive AI features. For more, check out our Pixel 6 Pro review. The 6a will be one of the first devices to receive the Android 13 update, which should roll out soon.

Google will provide at least five years of software and security, including at least three major versions of Android. Samsung supports most of its phones for five years, while Fairphone aims for six years and Apple supports its iPhone for up to seven years.

The Pixel 6a has 12-megapixel cameras on the back: a primary and an ultra-wide, but no telephoto zoom. Google’s camera software is one of the best in the business, and as a result the 6a takes better photos than many phones costing twice as much.
The main camera produces well-balanced, detailed photos in a wide range of different lighting conditions. The flagship camera is just as good, if a bit more sensitive to fine details, but it matches the color and tone of a flagship camera otherwise in this price range. The special night vision mode produces excellent low-light images, while the digital zoom is excellent at 2k but falls short at 7k.

Portrait mode is excellent and works with objects and pets as well as people, while video quality up to 4K at 60fps is consistent. The 8-megapixel selfie camera works similarly to capture more detail.
The camera app has many of the same features as other Google phones, including object trap or masking tools, which change distracting and unwanted objects in a photo to make them invisible.
Overall, while the 6a can’t match the Pixel 6’s cameras, it’s not really that far from beating smartphones that cost more than twice as much as the mid-range competition.
The Google Pixel 6a costs £399 ($449 / $749) with 128GB of storage in three colors and will ship on July 28.
Google Pixel 6a Review: Not Quite Enough
In comparison, the Pixel 6 costs £599, the Samsung Galaxy A53 costs £399, the Nothing Phone 1 costs £399, the Fairphone 4 costs £499 and the Apple iPhone SE costs £419.
Google is on the way. After years of good-but-not-great phones, the Pixel 6a is another great model that brings down the magic of the Android manufacturer at a very affordable price.
It uses the same recipe that makes Apple’s iPhone SE so great: a mid-range phone with the company’s best chip. This makes the 6a faster than any £399 phone and gives it access to the same features as Google phones. Battery life is very good even for a small phone.
The software is smart and refined and will be updated for at least five years, which is longer than most attackers. The camera is better than any other mid-range model, competing with phones twice the price or more.

Although the back is low, plastic not glass, and the screen isn’t as smooth as some of its competitors, it still looks good. The small size also makes it easy to carry.
The Pixel 6a is the best mid-range phone you can buy and a great choice if you’re looking for a smaller Android.
Pros: Good camera, nice little screen, great performance, good battery life, recycled aluminum, five years of security updates, Android 12, smart software features, competitive pricing. Cons: very slow charging, no optical zoom, no macro photography mode, no face unlock option, only 60Hz display.
The two-tone black color is a bit boring compared to other Pixel color variants. Photo: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian. The Google Pixel 6a is essentially a scaled-down version of the Pixel 6 mid-range phone that was announced in Singapore earlier this year. Almost everything in 6a is very small, reduced in size or power. The price (US$749) is also more palatable, though still not competitive. But for the most part, you get the same experience as the premium models, from the minimalist design with no bloatware to five years of software updates.
Google Pixel 6a
The Pixel 6a has the same design as the high-end models. So you get the same camera phone that looks the same over a “3D thermoformed composite back” (also known as a plastic back). The 6.1-inch OLED screen is smaller than I’d like. This 1080p display, unlike other Pixel 6 phones, has a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. But this shouldn’t be a problem for most users. It’s bright with HDR support and colors look great. Perhaps because of this smaller screen, the Pixel 6a lasted 14 hours and 17 minutes in our video playback test. The Pixel 6 Pro lasted about 13 hours, while the Google Pixel 6 had 15 hours. A few minor improvements over other Pixel 6 phones: Gorilla Glass 3 (not Victus) and IP67 (instead of IP68) waterproof and dustproof.
One of my favorite things about Pixel phones is the haptic feedback. The Pixel 6a offers solid, almost dynamic typing that enhances the typing experience. I’m not too keen on the in-display fingerprint sensor. Although it is accurate, it is not the fastest. The default screen animation – can be turned off, but not recommended – when you tap with your finger also contributes to boredom. As you might expect, the cameras are smaller than those on the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6. Unlike those 50-megapixel models, the Pixel 6a uses the same dual 12-megapixel camera as the Pixel 5 and. Pixel 4. No telephoto lens. The camera is fast and generally produces beautiful photos. But there is more noise than expected. The graphics have a distinct pixelated look. Low light performance was better
