Changing The Way You Think To Fulfil Your Potential

Changing The Way You Think To Fulfil Your Potential – Learning is not always fun. Especially when you discover something about yourself that isn’t as positive as you thought.

Last week we sat down to record episode 3 of our new podcast The Spain and Nick Show and I semi-anonymously made him very uncomfortable.

Changing The Way You Think To Fulfil Your Potential

We’re both fans of Carol Dweck’s book, Mindstone, and this week I want to talk about it as it relates to leadership.

Applying Growth Mindset To School Leadership

Spencer has years of experience leading successful teams and is also a big proponent of a growth mindset, so he was the perfect person to talk to about this topic.

It seemed like it was something he didn’t think too much about and kind of didn’t want to talk about. He was definitely a little hot under the collar.

I know Spencer has done a lot of work on the growth mindset, and it’s a topic she’s very familiar with.

But I think the added pressure of the taped conversation means he was afraid of looking bad and/or afraid of what people might think of him for not getting a good answer.

I reminded him that avoiding failure/mistakes or looking bad in front of others are aspects of a certain mindset.

“That’s very reasonable and very unpleasant to hear from me.” “But I think it’s probably fair.” – Spencer Ayres Developing self-awareness isn’t always fun

When you realize that you have a certain way of thinking in any area of your life that you didn’t know you had before, it can be very painful to come to terms with it at first.

I know that when I come to a discovery like this, I feel a pain in my chest. But it is precisely these kinds of learning and experiences that lead us to growth.

Mindset By Carol Dweck

I see a fixed, developmental mindset hanging in the balance. So you fixate on one side and growth on the other.

It is not that you are always stationary or constantly growing. Instead, you have areas of life that are more stable and others that are more evolving.

You may concentrate on your work for a while and put in a lot of effort. In the meantime, you may not focus so much on your health, for example, trying to eat right or exercise; Which is absolutely normal.

I think it’s really important to talk about these things to help you recognize that you have a certain mindset so you can make a conscious decision to act on it or not.

I also think it’s okay to have a certain way of thinking in certain areas of life as long as you’re aware of it and okay with it.

A common mistake people make is to fool themselves into believing they have a growth mindset, when they don’t necessarily have one.

“Oh, the growth mindset is good. Well, I’m good, so that must mean I have it. And I have to have it all the time.

Changing The Way You Think To Fulfil Your Potential

But in reality we are not like that. Yes, we may have a growth mindset in many areas, but we more than likely have a fixed mindset in many other areas as well.

As I think we were lucky enough to witness this conversation, Spencer was going through a process of defining an area in her life where she had a certain mindset.

He now has a choice about whether or not to switch to thinking about more growth in this area.

I think the implications of this conversation about leadership are huge because we can find areas of what we have demonstrated by thinking about our leadership styles and approaches and how we have done things in the past in terms of development and fixed mindsets. Where we can improve.

One of the keys to developing a growth mindset in others is to encourage them to take on difficult tasks and praise their efforts.

Of course, it is much easier to be the one asking the questions than the one answering them. So I want to thank Spencer for her courage and effort in this conversation.

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Dr. Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but revolutionary idea: the power of the mind. In this wonderful book, she shows how the way we think about our talents and abilities can dramatically affect school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every other area of human endeavor. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe abilities are fixed—are less likely to succeed than people with a growth mindset—those who believe abilities can be developed. The mindset shows how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can use this idea to promote great achievement.

Changing The Way You Think To Fulfil Your Potential

In this edition, Dweck offers a new understanding of his now famous and widespread concept. She presents a phenomenon she calls the false growth mindset and guides people to adopt a deeper and more authentic growth mindset. It also extends the concept of thinking beyond the individual to group and organizational culture. With the right mindset, you can lead, teach, and inspire those you love—changing their lives and yours.
